They say curiosity killed the cat; l always found that idiom interesting. It reminds me of the story of Lot’s wife …. was she just curious or was it something more sinister than that, could it be the great wealth or the influence or the grandiose lifestyle that she lived knowing that Lot prospered in Sodom so what was it?
But can we not all relate to her act of looking back, that attitude of believing, “Did I leave something behind that I still crave?” Let’s consider this further.
Lot and his wife and family had experienced the unusual mercy of God as the nation they lived in was under the judgment of God for the depth of the deprivation and sin that filled the nation.
God had passed a judgment of eradication of evil and this was certain and not reversible. But Lot, because of his relationship with Abraham was spared, the inherent covenant God has with Abraham extended to him.
“And while he lingered, the men took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city.” Genesis 19:16 NKJV
Let’s pause and consider ourselves and the covenant relationship we have with Christ. Like it was said about Lot and his family the Lord has been merciful to us.
“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not.” Lamentations 3:22 NKJV
So, our deliverance from the depravity and perversion that surrounds us is guaranteed through Christ Jesus.
The instructions and direction of the angel were clear to the family.
“So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.” Genesis 19:17 NKJV
“But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.” Genesis 19:26 NKJV
‘Looked back’- this is the basis of our consideration, what made her look back and there are quite a few reasons we can assume, a few thoughts will cross our minds and we can infer various things and we will probably be spot on.
But I want us to consider our own lives, bringing it home a bit.
Let’s consider the phases of our lives what are those things, thoughts ideologies, self-beliefs, achievements, successes, failures, tragedies, and disappointments.
All those poignant moments in our life that we have experienced throughout our journey that we may be struggling to leave behind when God presents an opportunity for the greater good that has not yet been unveiled. Do we look back in regret or appreciation. Only you can honestly say, how you feel when you cast your mind back.
In the case of our subject matter ‘Mrs. Lot’ the angel’s instructions were clear “Escape for your life and do not look back”
What is God saying to you as you take the next step in the new phase of your journey?
Are you even confident that God has presented new opportunities to you?
Are you certain that this path you currently walk is the path he has laid out for you?
The scripture says “For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live].” Ephesians 2:10 AMPC
Are you able to say that you are…
“taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them”
If this is the case, you need to keep your eyes on the one that makes promises and definitely, make good His Word.
Paul admonishes us to forget the things that are behind us and press on to the things that lie ahead.
Looking back makes it extremely difficult to move forward with pace and confidence. Keep your eyes on Christ with dogged determination that His faithfulness to His Word will carry you through the exciting journey he set your feet on.
Never look back unless you are planning to go that way.
Henry David Thoreau
The scriptures talk about living the good life, doing good works, and all because of the new life we have in Christ
As we spend time in God’s presence and make up our minds that He alone, we trust with our lives, in His mercy He will show us and lead us into the new phase in our journey of life no matter what stage we are in that journey. And we will not keep Looking Back!
